What is a Young Buffalo?

“Young Buffalo” (trẻ châu) is a slang term that I came across in my travels in Vietnam, currently my favorite country in the world. Vietnam is recently modernized country and is an emerging country in the world economy. Nearly all children go to school now, but there are still a small minority in the country side that tend to the buffalos. While most of society becomes more educated in ideas that may or may not have any value, these buffalo boys learn from life the real way. They may be more raw and less civilized than the rest of us, but there is no doubt they know how it really is. Generally “Young Buffalo” is used in a slightly derogatory way to mean childish, immature, ill-mannered or socially abrasive. But like most coins you come across, there is another side. For all the social ostracism these buffalo boys endure, they are also exposed to tremendous upside in life. They are free and unchained by societies unquestioned ideals. In their roaming, they may make many mistakes. But they will also come across hidden treasures that could not have been found if they had accepted the status quo.

Who Are You?

My name is Andrew Moyer and I self-identify as a young buffalo. From a young age, I never showed much promise in things most parents hope for. Socially, I was awkward and did not play well with others. In team sports, I never accomplished anything beyond participation trophies. Academically, I was mediocre. This triad is the summum bonum preached to young adults where I grew up. I was born and raised in the paper-pushing, empty-suit, fragalista, bureaucrat capital of the world, known to most as Washington D.C. From the very beginning, values unquestioned were pushed upon me. Despite their egregious inefficacies, certain ways of life were heralded as best. Eventually, the dam collapsed. My mind could no longer bear the weight of watching this needlessly mindless living, devoid of quality and value. Hence, the beginning of this blog. True to the INTP that I am, my deepest motivation is to see the world as it truly is. In this relentless pursuit, I will leave no stone unturned. I will also bear much risk. My hope for this blog is to share any upside I do come across in my endeavors. I also hope your appreciation will grow for the young buffalos in your life. If you find anything here that adds value to your life, please share it with those you think will benefit.

That’s great, but what do you write about?

In this blog, you will find everything from philosophy to DIYs and how-to. Any philosophy put forward is vetted by my doxastic commitment. In plain English, this means I eat my own cooking. I will also explore the two-wheeled life and review motorcycles worthy of our attention, as most young buffalos double as motaurs. I will review my favorite consumables which include but are not limited to coffee, wine, liquors and chocolate. There is a chance you may even find a recipe or two. Travel is a given. All buffalo boys (and buffalo girls) like to wander the globe to find geography-specific upside. Languages and culture will be explored alongside travel. I hope to help you find the best places you never thought to go. I will also share about my most pivotal experiences following Jesus, and I promise it will never be sterile ideologies. Another topic that I hold close is sustainable living and conservation. From a more intellectual side, I will share worthy information I find related to physics, math, biochemistry and programming. I will also share about some of the best books in my library and give you the reasons of why you should read them. I am not holding myself to the above topics though.

Can I contact you?

Feel free to contact me at reflectionsofayoungbuffalo@gmail.com. I love perusing my inbox looking for some upside. I can’t promise any timely responses though. I might be too busy enjoying a glass of cà phê sữa đá with the local buffalos.
